As a forerunner in state formation and nation-building, China's time-honored history embodies a wealth of experience in state governance. To further advance the research on historical politics, fully explore the valuable cases and data embedded in history, promote interdisciplinary exchanges and dialogues, generate research findings and theoretical innovations with academic and practical value, and boost the development of an independent knowledge system for philosophy and social sciences, the School of International Studies at Renmin University of China, Chenghai Institute of Global Development and Security at Renmin University of China, and the School of Government at East China University of Political Science and Law will co-host the 7th Academic Workshop on "States and Governance in History".
The workshop will be held at the Tongzhou Campus of Renmin University of China on November 29, 2025, with a synchronous online session available.
Advocating in-depth discussions featuring small scale, extended duration and professional focus, and adhering to the principle of prioritizing quality over quantity, we now invite scholars at home and abroad engaged in research on historical political science, historical sociology, historical political economy and historical public administration to submit approximately 12 academic papers.
Discussions will center on the theme of "State and Governance in History", covering specific topics including but not limited to the following: The value orientation, theoretical innovation and methodological application of historical political science, historical sociology, historical political economy and historical public administration; The formation and construction of the state in ancient China, and modern reflections on its state governance; Major political reforms in ancient China and their modern enlightenments; The deliberative and decision-making systems in ancient China; The bureaucratic personnel systems in ancient China; The supervision and judicial systems in ancient China; The military and political systems in ancient China; and Grassroots governance and crisis management in ancient China.
Submitted papers must be unpublished in domestic and international journals, with a word count of over 10,000 Chinese characters;
