On November 29, 2025, the 7th session of the Chenghai Global · Theoretical Studies Workshop and the 7th Workshop on "State and Governance in History" was held in Conference Room 228 of Ye Chenghai Building at the Tongzhou Campus of Renmin University of China. The workshop was jointly hosted by the School of International Relations of Renmin University of China, the Chenghai Institute of Global Development and Security, and the School of Government of East China University of Political Science and Law, and co-organized by the Center for Historical and Political Studies of the Chenghai Institute at Renmin University of China and the Editorial Department of Chinese Political Science.
Adopting a hybrid format of online and offline participation, the workshop drew more than 20 scholars from renowned domestic and international universities and academic institutions, including the Chinese Public Administration Society, Tsinghua University, Peking University, the University of Hong Kong, Fudan University, Zhejiang University, Nankai University, Central China Normal University, Hunan University, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Carleton College (USA), East China University of Political Science and Law, and Renmin University of China, as well as a number of students.
The opening ceremony of the workshop was hosted by Lecturer Li huan from the School of International Relations at Renmin University of China. Professor Ren Feng, from the School of International Relations at Renmin University of China and Editor-in-Chief of Chinese Political Science, and Associate Professor Liu Yueming, Vice Dean of the School of Government at East China University of Political Science and Law, delivered separate speeches respectively.
Professor Ren Feng first extended a warm welcome to all the experts and scholars participating in this workshop on behalf of the Center for Historical and Political Studies of the Chenghai Institute at Renmin University of China and the Editorial Department of Chinese Political Science. He pointed out that historical political science has been listed as an iconic concept of Chinese political science, and in the future, it is necessary to understand the complex historical context of state governance from three dimensions: socialist state-founding, traditional state-founding and modern state-founding.
Vice Dean Liu Yueming expressed his gratitude to the co-host, the School of International Relations at Renmin University of China, on behalf of the School of Government of East China University of Political Science and Law. He pointed out that the academic workshop on State and Governance in History stands as an important testament to the in-depth cooperation between the two schools and has evolved into a key academic platform in the field of interdisciplinary research of political science and history in China. This year's workshop has provided a vital exchange platform for young scholars, from which a great many outstanding research outcomes featuring a distinct awareness of research questions and rigorous, solid historical materials have emerged, demonstrating the vitality of academic inheritance and innovation. In closing, Liu Yueming wished the workshop a complete success.
Associate Professor Yan Haibing from the School of Government of East China University of Political Science and Law delivered the concluding remarks. He spoke highly of the discussion outcomes of this workshop, pointing out that it featured both Chinese and English academic writing, covered qualitative and quantitative research methods, and integrated theoretical discussions with empirical studies, thus demonstrating a prominent characteristic of inclusiveness.
The participating scholars represented diverse academic backgrounds and engaged in equal exchanges, with both presentations and comments maintaining an exceptionally high standard, which fostered a pure atmosphere for intellectual inquiry. Yan Haibing announced the plan for the workshop to be held the following year, and warmly invited all participants to continue paying attention to and participating in it, so as to make more original contributions to the construction of an autonomous knowledge system for Chinese political science.
